Hey Oppo, I’m looking for a cooler or box or luggage (pelican case? ) to strap to my Miata luggage rack. I really don’t want to spend hundreds on this though because I’d rather spend that kind of cash on actual car stuff. So my requirements:
1) under $150
2) rugged/ weatherproof
3) dimensions around 30" x 15" i think but I will measure to be sure
Basically I’d like to use it as extra storage when needed, and as an actual cooler for food and drinks on trips and such.
So, what you got?

Just get any random cooler at Walmart and zip tie it to the luggage rack :p

“Are you traveling light, or heavy?”
Get a nice steamer trunk, and put a cooler in it when necessary!

Lol that's double the price though silly

I might. But if there's something that's more tactical I'd look into it

these seem to work pretty well
and they’re free (well...they’re left outside when the shops closed anyway...kinda free)

I think these modern rugged coolers are a bit absurd, but I will never need to keep ice for a week, so I’m likely not the target audience.

Oh man that's a great idea. Plus warm pizza.

Yeah I don't care about the ice days specifically, but it speaks to the seal quality which is somewhat important when it's outside driving in bad weather on a highway lol although, I wonder how dangerous drag will be at higher speeds...

“I have no response to that.”

One worry with that is that it’s got thick walls, so relatively small inside dimensions given the outside dimensions.
If you gave up some of the amazing cooling capabilities you could get something cheaper and/or more useful

Yeah I’ve seen some great cheaper options but they don’t have good seals. Plastic on plastic is fine sitting still but under vibration I’d like a better latch and rubber seal.

I see I see.
I do envy you. My MR2 has similar storage constraints, but no such option of a luggage rack. I take it
camping
and it’s my only car
, I could really use that space!

I’ve used a lot of rugged cases for my work and my opinion is that nothing beats Pelican. They just take the abuse and keep going like nothing else does, especially the Storm Case line. I managed to lose a case with $85k of camera equipment out of the bed of a Ram 2500 onto the pavement and both the case and gear were totally fine. You might have to spend more like $200 to get to the size you want but it is well worth stretching the budget. B&H usually has the best prices on Pelican stuff. Save a few bucks by getting it without the foam since you won’t be making a custom fit case. You can turn it into a pretty decent cooler by grabbing a board of blue insulation at Home Depot and cutting it to size to line the case.

But worth every dollar!

Yeah that was my first choice. I use pelicans extensively at work too and love them. I guess if I can justify using the box for other more often jobs then it could work.

Oh there are definitely luggage racks for MR2, though maybe only gen 3? Idk but they came up in my search

Ended up buying this in orange for $155.

Ah yes, as it as a more classic roadster shape. Mine is a second gen. It seems there are some options, mostly on top. I’d want them off though if I had the roof off and I don’t think it would be so simple.
